January 13th. What's the significance?

Everyone has a specific date that holds a special significance in life.  It could be: the day you graduated college, the day you married your best friend, the day you welcomed that beautiful baby into the world, the day the doctors told you about a life long illness, the day you said "goodbye" to a beloved family member or friend, the day you committed your life to Christ, the day you were finally able to retire, etc.  There are many milestones in our lives that are remembered and referred to on our calendars.  In our home, one of those days is January 13th.

Daddy & Aidan - Spring 2015

This date first became important to us in 2012.  It had been almost 1 month since we found out Dave had testicular cancer (you can read more about this in Cancer: The Aftershock and In Christ Alone: This Wife's Perspective on Cancer) and he was in the hospital undergoing surgery to remove the growing tumor.  As we said "caio" to that terrible mass, we also had to say "adios" to future biological children.  It was a bitter sweet day; a moment marked in our minds with comfort knowing the tumor was gone, but sadness knowing that we would have to pursue other options in order to grow our young family.

My Grandparents' Legacy

Then, exactly three years later, on January 13, 2015, as God was welcoming my grandfather into heaven, earth was welcoming a beautiful baby (you can read more about this in the post Aidan, Our Baby Boy) who would soon enter our home.  Again, this was a day of many emotions.  Grief at the loss of a godly man we loved, and excitemnet over the incredible bundle of perfection that would complete our family.

God has used Aidan in our home, and in our hearts, to heal wounds and bring us joy!

This year, on January 13, 2016, we rejoice in getting to celebrate Aidan's 1st birthday.  While a baby's 1st birthday is always a big deal, his birthday is extra special.  When you are foster parents you never know how long a child will be in your life, so the fact that we get to share this important milestone with him in our home is a pretty exciting thing!

Happy 1st Birthday, Sweet Boy!
We may not know what our future(s) hold, but we are certainly finding contentment in the moment and will celebrate January 13 in our hearts for years to come.

"plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future..."
